Gravel adventures in Evo – endless forest roads and tranquillity

Evo Green Gold Gravel Loop is a 35 km cycling adventure in the heart of Evo Hiking Area. The circular route winds along forest roads and sandy trails, taking 4–6 hours to complete at a leisurely pace.

Evo is one of Southern Finland’s largest continuous forest areas, where old-growth woods, quiet lakes, and untouched wilderness create a true back-to-nature experience. Along the way, you’ll find swimming spots, campfire sites, lean-to shelters, and plenty of places to pause and enjoy the silence.

For those wanting to stay longer, Evo offers camping areas, rental huts, and cottages — perfect for overnight bikepacking or as a base for deeper exploration of this unique forest landscape.

Cycling Escape into the Wilderness

Evo Green Gold Gravel Loop is a circular route winding through the diverse landscapes of Evo Hiking Area. The 33 km loop follows dirt roads and sandy outdoor trails, with a few short asphalt sections along the way. Forested ridges and countless lakes create a refreshing variety in the scenery. The ride typically takes 4–6 hours to complete, but with a more relaxed, adventurous spirit, you can easily spend longer enjoying the nature experiences and attractions that showcase the history of forest use along the route.

Set in the unique watershed landscapes of Evo, the Green Gold Gravel Loop offers peaceful surroundings where tranquil lakes like Niemisjärvi invite you to take a break, enjoy the waterside atmosphere, go fishing, or simply pause for a moment of stillness.

First overnight bikepacking trip

The surroundings of Evo Student Campus serve as the heart of the route and a great base for exploring. The area has rental cottages, camping sites and reservable huts, making it suitable both for first-time overnight bikepackers and for experienced touring cyclists. From the campus area, you can also access a wide network of marked hiking trails, as well as lean-tos, campfire sites, and plenty of geocaches that invite you to stop and explore on foot.

Evo is easy to reach by bus or car from Hämeenlinna. The area lies only 1–2 hours’ drive from southern Finland’s major cities such as Helsinki, Tampere, Lahti and Hämeenlinna. For those arriving by car, parking areas can be found in several parts of the Evo Hiking Area.

Starting from the campus of Finland’s first forestry institute, gentle forest roads lead you through peaceful scenery, past ancient woods and scenic picnic spots. Easy enough for beginners yet rewarding for experienced riders, this is cycling at its most relaxing – surrounded by the sounds and stillness of the Finnish forest.

Good to know

Season

  • The route can be cycled in three seasons: spring, summer, and autumn.
  • The best time for the trip is from May to September.

Campfires and cooking

  • There are campfire sites along the route, but firewood supply varies. Bring a camping stove for reliability.
  • Fires are only permitted at designated campfire sites. Open fires are strictly prohibited during wildfire warnings. Check local warnings at the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s website.

Bikes and equipment

  • Any well-maintained touring, gravel, or mountain bike is suitable.
  • For comfort, use bikepacking bags instead of a backpack.
  • Recommended tyres are at least 40 mm wide and puncture-protected.

On foot

  • Several interesting sites along the route can only be reached on foot. Bring suitable walking shoes and a lock for your bike.

Waste and recycling

  • There are no waste collection points along the trails.
  • Niemisjärvi has a waste collection point. Waste management in Evo is centralized in the recreational fishing area, where sorted waste is collected and taken to municipal disposal by the local operator.

Swimming

  • Swimming is allowed in Evo’s lakes. Easy access is provided at the piers of Ylinen, Keskinen, and Alinen Rautjärvi, the natural sandy beach of Alinen Rautjärvi, and the piers at Niemisjärvi.
  • Please note: there are no official swimming beaches in the area.

Mobile phone coverage and safety

  • Mobile phone coverage is limited in some areas. Download the route map to your phone beforehand.
  • It’s a good practice to tell someone where you are heading and when you expect to return.
  • Download the 112 Suomi app before your trip. You can call for help either through the app or by dialling 112.

Education and research

  • Evo Centre is home to Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) forestry education and research. The centre is surrounded by 1,800 hectares of teaching forest, used both for studies and for recreational purposes.

  • In commercial accommodations along the route
  • Using Everyone’s Rights (within the legal framework)

Services and Accommodation Options

Food & drink

  • When setting out on the route, it is important to bring enough food and drinking water. We recommend packing supplies for at least one full day.
  • At Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) you’ll find a lunch restaurant open during the academic year, where light refreshments may also be available.
  • At Pikku-Apaja by Niemisjärvi you can enjoy lunch or light snacks – remember to check the opening hours in advance.

Difficulty

The route is almost entirely on gravel and forest roads and can be cycled in either direction. There is one section where you need to cross a busier road twice (Hämeenlinna – Padasjoki, road no. 53), which should be crossed with caution.

The climbs are short but fairly steep, typical of southern Finland.

The route is suitable for cyclists of all levels. While most of the terrain is easy gravel road, some short technical sections (e.g., the trail leading to Onkimakangas shelter) may be challenging for beginners. The route is also suitable for e-bikes and families, but allow plenty of time for breaks and enjoying the scenery.

Difficulty rating: 2–3 – very easy gravel/forest road / easy mountain biking route.

Getting there

By car: There is parking available at the area. Check parking locations on Luontoon.fi.

By bus: You can travel Hämeenlinna – Lammi – Evo Centre. A bus change is required at Lammi. Check routes and timetables in the Hämeenlinna travel guide.

By train: Evo is approximately 50 km from Hämeenlinna railway station.

Motorhome facilities: Evo has two motorhome parks with services for those travelling by car or campervan.

Route description

Starting point: Evo Student Campus (Saarelantie 1 , 16970 Evo)

Evo Student Campus – Onkimakangas (approx. 5 km)
The route begins at Evo Centre, where plenty of parking is available. Right at the start, cyclists can refresh themselves with a swim at two nearby beaches. The trail heads east along a short stretch of paved road before turning onto well-maintained gravel roads. The first rest stop is Onkimakangas lean-to, equipped with a fireplace and a dry toilet, offering a peaceful break in the middle of nature. Accessing the lean-to may require a short walk while pushing the bike due to technical terrain.

Onkimakangas – Niemisjärvi (approx. 10 km)
From Onkimakangas, the route continues along smooth gravel roads towards Niemisjärvi. This section is easy riding with beautiful views along the way. Niemisjärvi is a perfect spot for a longer break: two lean-tos, a fireplace, a dry toilet, and a sandy beach await cyclists. The area is also a popular overnight destination, making it an excellent place to linger if time allows.

Niemisjärvi – Vaarinkorpi – Sorsakolu (approx. 10 km)
The trail continues on rolling gravel roads towards the northeastern part of the loop. Here, cyclists will find the Vaarinkorpi and Sorsakolu lean-tos, both equipped with fireplaces and dry toilets. Sorsakolu, located on the scenic shore of Lake Savijärvi, is an idyllic place to pause, relax, and enjoy the lakeside atmosphere.

Sorsakolu – Evo Camp Area – Syrjänalunen – Evo Student Campus (approx. 5 km)
The final stretch leads west through the historic Evo camp area, well known for hosting major scouting camps. The area provides several fireplaces and toilets. Before returning to Evo Centre, cyclists can stop at Syrjänalunen lean-to, which features a jetty and a fireplace, ideal for a short break. The last kilometres pass by Keskinen Rautjärvi and cross the Saarela Canal just before arriving back at the starting point.
