Picture yourself spending a summer’s day following winding country roads that lead to the courtyards of historic manors, the sunny terraces of berry farms, and charming village cafés. Across Häme, summer cafés welcome visitors with memorable experiences, beautiful rural scenery, and warm local hospitality. Each café has its own unique story to tell, inviting you to pause for a while and savour Häme’s relaxed way of life, seasonal delicacies, and the simple joy of discovering hidden gems.
Did you know that Häme is home to dozens of unique summer cafés? Some are nestled in beautifully restored old barns, others can be found in the grounds of historic manor houses, on berry farms, or in charming village halls. Some are open throughout the summer, while others welcome visitors for only a few days each year. These seasonal cafés offer an authentic glimpse into the local culture and the traditional way of life in Häme.
Every summer café tells its own story
Minna Takala, a regional development expert from the Regional Council of Häme and a passionate local traveller, has been visiting summer cafés for years. As a pet project, she has even created her own database to track the opening hours of summer cafés and other seasonal destinations.
In particular, Takala appreciates that each café possesses its own distinct character.
– Summer cafés are delightful places to visit, as no two are alike. They reflect the personality, passion, and dedication of their owners. Visiting a summer café feels like being welcomed into someone’s home, where the hosts genuinely want to offer their guests something special, Takala explains.
A good example is HillSide Café, housed in the cosy loft of a traditional barn in Riihimäki. Meanwhile, next to the historic church in Hattula, Hattulan Pirtti hosts a pop-up café where themes and hosts change throughout the summer. Depending on when you visit, you might find yourself at a Hawaiian-inspired summer party or a Barbie-themed café created by local children.
– Visiting a café is like a little cultural experience. The creativity and unique character of these seasonal cafés never fail to delight, says Takala.
Berry farm cafés – Häme’s hidden gems
If you’re looking to discover more than just the best-known attractions during your holiday, head out onto the quiet country roads of Häme. Along the way, you might stumble upon unforgettable summer moments – and perhaps the finest coffee and freshly baked cinnamon bun you’ve ever tasted.
– Not all cafés have websites, and you won’t always find them online. Ask locals for tips and keep your eyes open. Part of the experience is the joy of discovering something unexpected, says Takala.
According to Takala, some of the most charming summer cafés in Häme can be found on berry farms. Though easy to miss, these hidden gems offer exactly what many visitors seek in summer: fresh seasonal produce, peaceful rural landscapes, and an authentic atmosphere.
On the counters, you’ll find strawberry cakes, berry pies, waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, and other seasonal delicacies. Visitors can also explore farm shops or meet animals such as sheep, chickens, and rabbits.
Places such as Hakola Berry Farm, Kankainen Farm, Kuusamo Strawberry Farm, Iso-Hiisi Manor Farm, Syrjälä Berry Farm, and Peltosirkku Berry Farm offer a perfect setting to enjoy a coffee break and locally made treats in an authentic farm atmosphere.
–Many farms offer something new every summer, which keeps them interesting even for returning visitors, says Takala.

Experience pop-up summer cafés during local events
Part of what makes Häme’s summer cafés so special is their seasonal, temporary nature. Not all experiences are available year-round, or even every weekend.
Takala notes that many small cafés are only open on special event days, such as Open Villages, Open Farms, and Open Gardens events. One such event is Hauhon Herkkujen Yö (The Night of Hauho Delicacies), where visitors can explore the region’s rich local food culture.
In many cases, local residents prepare the baked goods themselves, and the café experience is enriched with live music or other performances. According to Takala, it is precisely these fleeting experiences that make summer café culture so fascinating.
Explore Häme’s summer cafés by bike
Takala recommends exploring Häme’s summer cafés by bicycle. Cycling is an ideal way to travel from one destination to another, exploring the region’s lake scenery, rural villages, and cultural heritage more closely than in a car.
Takala particularly recommends the Hiidentie cycling route, which leads through Turenki, Laurinmäki, Hattula, Iittala, and Visavuori. Along the way, cyclists pass through two nationally significant landscapes: the Vanajavesi Valley and the cultural scenery of Sääksmäki. The route also features historic villages, medieval churches, museums, birdwatching towers, and several charming summer cafés, including Justiinan Kahvila, Kaffeli & Köökki, Wanhan Koulun Rauha, Roadhouse Café Neulansilmä, and Jalavanniemi.
– When cycling, you can breathe in the fresh summer air, hear the birds singing, and stop whenever something catches your eye. Summer feels much more vivid from the saddle of a bicycle, Takala explains.
The route can easily be combined with local train services, which allow bicycles onboard free of charge. You can also travel from Visavuori on the water bus, although bicycle spaces must be reserved and paid for in advance.

Simple feel-good moments
Ultimately, summer cafés are not just about coffee or pastries, but about the small, uplifting moments along the way. According to Takala, the most memorable cafés are those that surprise visitors in one way or another, whether through their atmosphere, scenic setting, or the genuine effort made to ensure guests feel welcome and at ease.
One of Takala’s personal favourites is Koskicafe Mylly, located by a stream in Loppi.
– At Koskicafe Mylly, you immediately notice that everything has been created with the aim of delighting visitors. Guests can fish in the pond, enjoy fresh salads and baked goods, and relax in beautiful surroundings. The best part is that there is something new every summer, inviting you to come back and see what they’ve come up with next.
Many of Häme’s most distinctive cafés are built around a unique concept. One example is Kahvila Perunakuoppa in Loppi, where local culture can be both seen and tasted. In addition to baked goods, the café also serves fresh new potatoes. The combination may sound unusual at first, but that is precisely what makes it so memorable.
The true charm of these summer cafés often lies in the smallest details: vintage porcelain cups, homemade pies, blooming gardens, and the warm hospitality of owners who take time to chat with their guests.
– Most visits to summer cafés leave you pleasantly surprised. And perhaps that is why people feel drawn to return year after year, Takala concludes.
