Winter in Häme – Snowy nature turns every moment into an experience

In winter, Häme invites international travellers to discover a unique blend of outdoor adventure, serenity, and pure, easily accessible nature. Just about an hour’s drive from Helsinki Airport, visitors step into a winter wonderland of snow-covered forests and peaceful landscapes – far from the bustle of large tourist centres.

Winter in Häme is lively yet wonderfully relaxed. Hundreds of frozen lakes transform into scenic trails, forests invite you to roam, and evenings culminate in the soothing warmth of a sauna and an invigorating ice swim.

In Häme, prices are lower than in Finland’s northernmost regions, yet quality and safety remain at premium levels. Accommodation options range from charming cottages to distinguished manor estates, including the historic Vanajanlinna. This unique combination makes Häme particularly attractive to visitors from Central Europe who appreciate easy access, authenticity, and a winter destination that feels exotic yet refreshingly free from mass tourism.

The short distance and easy accessibility also make it possible to take a day trip by train from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna. Visitors are often surprised by how quickly the city bustle gives way to the peace and quiet of nature.

“Hämeenlinna is only an hour’s train ride from Finland’s main airports. Yet here in Häme, we are truly surrounded by nature,” says Kirsi Reinikka, entrepreneur at Fenix Adventures.

Memorable experiences in snowy forests and on frozen lakes

Reinikka sees Häme as a destination with great international potential, highlighting its unique attractions and strengths. She notes that German and other Central European tourists are drawn to Häme for its serene nature, peaceful atmosphere, and authentic locals.

“In Finland, people from Häme are playfully called slow, but that is actually one of our strengths. Slow living in Häme is authentic. It shapes people into genuine, honest, and approachable individuals,” Reinikka says with a smile.

In Häme, international visitors are enchanted by the snowy forests and the region’s 785 lakes. In winter, these lakes turn into travel routes and natural playgrounds, ideal for ice fishing, snowshoeing, kick sledding, skating, or fatbiking.

“Walking or skating on the ice is a thrilling experience for many foreign visitors. Tour skating is especially enjoyable here in Häme, since we usually have less snow than in the north. There are several excellent skating trails, and plenty of spots to rest along the way,” says Reinikka.

Winter activities for every taste

Fenix Adventures, a family business from Hämeenlinna, offers organised activities for groups of all sizes, from intimate gatherings to large events. In practice, most groups are small, allowing everyone to fully relax and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature.

Winter activities in Häme are diverse, yet simple to enjoy. Kick sledding and sliding snowshoeing are great examples of low-threshold sports that are suitable for first-timers.

“Sliding snowshoes have become very popular. They allow you to move comfortably through the terrain even when the snow isn’t deep. No skiing experience is required, and you can simply wear your own winter boots. As you go, the surrounding forest and lake landscapes gradually reveal themselves in a peaceful, unhurried way,” says Reinikka.

Winter fatbiking is another pleasant surprise for many visitors. The wide tires ensure a stable and smooth ride, even in snow. In fact, the trails are often easier to ride in winter than in summer, as uneven roots and rocks are covered by snow.

Reinikka emphasises sustainability and safety in all her services. Nature is explored using pure muscle power, without electrical aids or motors. The routes are well-mapped, the pace is kept moderate, and groups are instructed in proper gear and layering. For international visitors, the biggest concern is often the cold, but Southern Finland’s winters are rarely severe enough to prevent outdoor activities. Warm clothing and boots can be rented if needed, so everyone can enjoy the experience comfortably.

Sauna and ice swimming make a winter’s day truly unforgettable

For many international travellers, the combination of a hot sauna and a cold ice bath is the highlight of a winter visit to Häme. The steamy sauna, pure white snow, and the dark, icy water create a contrast that stays with you long after your journey. Reinikka notes that visitors are usually both curious and brave when it comes to trying ice swimming for the first time.

“The experience often evokes laughter and gasps, but also pure delight. Ice swimming is something visitors simply don’t want to miss,” says Reinikka.

Ice swimming is more than just a physical thrill; it is a vital part of Finnish culture that travellers want to experience for an authentic taste of local life. The steamy sauna and icy plunge leave you feeling euphoric, providing a deep sense of relaxation for the whole body and soul.

Discover history and culture during your winter adventure

Häme is not only a beautiful and diverse nature destination, but it also has an exceptionally rich cultural history. In Hämeenlinna, Finland’s oldest inland city, cultural experiences can be seamlessly combined with winter outdoor activities. A fatbike or snowshoe adventure through snowy landscapes, a warm coffee by the fire, and a visit to a historic landmark come together to create memories that last a lifetime.

“For example, fatbike tours can take you to Häme Castle, the Aulanko observation tower, or the surroundings of Vanajanlinna, where nature, history, and local stories come together,” says Kirsi Reinikka.

Vanajanlinna offers a luxurious manor setting with high-quality accommodation, and its surroundings are ideal for almost any winter sport, from curling to ice skating.
