The folk tale lives on to this day

Legend has it that an ancient demon once lived in caves in the Kaakkomäki mountains, deep in the Loppi wilderness. Taking the form of a giant, the demon caused mischief while the church was being built in the 17th century. When the church bells finally began to ring, the demon roared in anger, “No more peace with Santa Pirjo’s chime!” The church, named after Saint Birgitta, was locally known as Santa Pirjo. Furious, the demon hurled a massive boulder toward the bell tower, but it landed on Tiirinkallio by Lake Loppijärvi. Villagers then rolled it into the lake, only to find it brought misfortune, as livestock fell ill and died. With a united effort, they hoisted it onto a ledge, and prosperity returned to Loppi. This folklore teaches a lesson: the villagers worked together to overcome misfortune, a trait still central to the people of Loppi.

Inside the old house is an old harmonium with a low round chair in front of it. Next to the harmonium is a window with red geraniums and an old wooden rocking chair.

Sense the peace of the old church

Visitors can explore the historic Saint Birgitta’s Church, or Santa Pirjo, during the summer. Standing since the 17th century, this wooden church is one of Finland’s oldest, located in the serene, age-old landscape of Vanhan Kirkonmäki. Nearby is the Lukkarin Puustelli cottage, home to the Local History Museum with a collection of over 1,000 artifacts, some dating back to the 1600s.
