He built artificial ponds, scenic viewpoints, and the 33-meter-high Aulanko Observation Tower, while also planting exotic tree species. At one time, Aulanko was home to Finland’s first zoo.

Standertskjöld wanted the area to remain open to the public, and in 1926, the City of Hämeenlinna acquired it. Aulanko was designated a nature reserve in 1930, with continuous conservation efforts through replanting and restoration. Today, Aulanko is also part of Finland’s first national urban park.
