Aulanko Nature Reserve and History
The uniqueness of Aulanko lies in its multifaceted offerings. Whether you are strolling through the beautifully manicured park, immersing yourself in the historical ambiance of ancient ruins, or setting out on an adventure into the inviting wilderness, Aulanko will surely captivate you.
Aulanko has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and served as a defensive fortress during the Middle Ages. The history of the forest park began in 1883 when Colonel Hugo Standertskjöld purchased the Karlberg estate and created an English-style park. He built artificial ponds, scenic viewpoints, and the 33-meter-high Aulanko Observation Tower, while also planting exotic tree species. At one time, Aulanko was home to Finland’s first zoo.

Standertskjöld wanted the area to remain open to the public, and in 1926, the City of Hämeenlinna acquired it. Aulanko was designated a nature reserve in 1930, with continuous conservation efforts through replanting and restoration. Today, Aulanko is also part of Finland’s first national urban park.
The Beauty of Nature Year-Round – Aulanko Observation Tower and Surrounding Landscapes
Aulanko’s nature offers a diverse experience, with its enchanting forests, expansive lake views, and dramatic rock formations. Trails wind through ancient oak and linden groves, leading adventurers deep into nature’s embrace.

Visitors can also venture to Aulangonvuori Hill, where the Aulanko Observation Tower stands tall at the highest point. From the tower’s summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views over Vanajavesi Valley, one of Finland’s most magnificent national landscapes. This is where you can truly feel the echoes of history, as these very scenes once inspired the great composer Jean Sibelius in his creative work.
From the tower’s courtyard, an old stone staircase invites curious explorers to descend the hill to the base of the rocky outcrop. Here, you will find the charming Karhut (Bears) statue, a striking soapstone sculpture completed in 1906.
Aulanko’s nature is crisscrossed with numerous trails and hiking routes, providing an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the serenity, beauty, and historical depth of the area. One must not forget Sibelius Forest, which stretches along the eastern shore of Aulanko Lake. As a designated nature reserve, it offers an interesting nature trail with informational signs detailing the area’s unique features.
