A manor experience in Häme – history, nature, and modern luxury

Häme’s manors offer international travellers an unforgettable experience: local culture, breathtaking landscapes, authentic Finnish cuisine, and serene privacy. A manor stay in Häme is more than a visit—it’s a journey into the heart of Finland, amidst forests, lakes, and stories, far from the bustle of crowded tourist destinations.

On the shores of Lake Kaartjärvi in Loppi, Kanta-Häme, lies one of the region’s most talked-about destinations: The Terwa Nordic Hideaway. The experience starts with the journey: a scenic one-hour drive from Helsinki or a swift 20-minute helicopter flight from the Helsinki airport.

Set on its own private 10-hectare peninsula, The Terwa offers a premium setting for weddings, corporate retreats, and special events. The property was acquired in February 2025 by Kari Järvenpää, who had long admired the estate from his own cottage pier nearby.

“I could see the manor from my pier, just 600 metres away. When it came up for sale and I went to take a look, I fell in love immediately. It was exquisitely restored and luxurious, yet it retained an authentic, home-like charm.”

Built in the 1850s, the manor has evolved from a recreation and caravan site operated by the City of Riihimäki to a private residence, and now into Järvenpää’s vision of a premium charter hotel.

“I never imagined the kind of reception the place would receive. I fell in love with it, and so have our guests.”

The history of the area dates back to the 17th century, when Queen Christina of Sweden donated the estate to the Mayor of Helsinki. In the 19th century, the Rautakoski ironworks was established on the manor’s grounds, and the production of tar and turpentine made the area thrive.

The name Terwa, derived from the Finnish word for tar, honours this legacy. Traces of old tar pits and excavations are still part of the landscape, and the site’s history lives on in the room cards, menus, and stories shared with guests, but above all in its unique atmosphere.

Modern luxury in the heart of nature

Today, The Terwa features 15 double rooms and several meeting spaces. Järvenpää also plans to build an additional 10–15 private villas on the estate.

At The Terwa, a historic setting blends with modern, high-quality comfort. Linen sheets, down duvets, elegant bathrooms, and carefully considered details create a truly luxurious stay.

Yet the luxury never feels cold or distant; it is warm and inviting. Guests often say that time simply slows down at The Terwa.

Nature awaits right outside your door. The Häme Lynx Trail offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and canoeing without needing to travel elsewhere. The nearby Liesjärvi National Park and Komio Nature Reserve provide an even deeper immersion in Finnish nature. During Forest Mind walks, guests move slowly through the forest, listening to its sounds and allowing nature’s calm to settle in.

A culinary journey into Finnish flavours

Food plays a key role in the manor experience at The Terwa. The culinary philosophy focuses on locally sourced, domestic ingredients, including freshwater fish, high-quality meats, and seasonal vegetables. Every dinner tells a story, allowing guests to connect with Finnish culture one bite at a time.

“Our international guests appreciate the clean, natural flavours of Finnish cuisine. Our meat, fish, and vegetarian menus highlight local root vegetables and the flavours of the forest,” says Järvenpää.

Exotic charm in Southern Finland

The Terwa does not aim to compete with large tourist resorts. Instead, it offers something entirely different: privacy, tranquillity, and a deep connection with nature.

“The world is full of beautiful buildings, and so is our country. Still, I believe that people come here primarily for the Finnish nature and tranquillity, as well as the culture and the food,” says Järvenpää.

Southern Finland is defined by four distinct seasons: the luminous summer nights, the vibrant colours of autumn, the white silence of winter, and the gentle awakening of spring. Together, they create a nature experience that is truly unique for international travellers.

Kari Järvenpää aims for more than just happy guests.

“I hope that when guests leave, they’ll say: ‘I experienced something here that I couldn’t find anywhere else. Everything was a bit quirky and exotic, but in a good way. I will remember this visit forever.’”

Discover authentic Finland through its historic manors

Manor experiences in the Häme region can also be found in Hattula, Humppila, and Hämeenlinna. Inkala Manor is renowned for its award-winning cuisine. The manor’s country kitchen combines traditional recipes with modern flavours, highlighting locally sourced food and Finnish ingredients. The experience is topped off with the soft steam of a smoke sauna and a refreshing dip in Lake Alajärvi.

Urpola Manor provides a beautiful setting for celebrations and memorable experiences in a lush park landscape. The manor exudes a timeless charm, and its unique sauna world—with seven saunas ranging from a traditional smoke sauna to a treehouse sauna—offers visitors a true taste of Finnish sauna tradition.

Vanajanlinna is a distinguished estate built in the 1920s, where guests can walk through the same salons once frequented by Marshal Mannerheim. Steeped in history and protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency, the estate offers an elegant setting for accommodation, events, golf, and fine dining. Spending the night here feels like stepping into Finland’s cultural past.

Together, the manors of Häme offer a unique blend of Finnish culture, stunning nature, delicious local cuisine, sauna traditions, and the peaceful charm of the countryside, creating an unforgettable journey into the heart of authentic Finland!
